"I'm old enough to go now, right?"

Mr. and Mrs. Leitun exchanged glances, temporarily forgetting the food set before them. There was a short silence, then Mrs. Leitun said carefully, "Whatever do you mean child?"

Elsaie refrained from rolling her eyes, instead giving the potatoes in her bowl a sharp poke with her fork."You know very well what I mean Mam," she said as patiently as she could. "I'm ten and eight years now, I can take care of myself. So can I go?"

"Go where?" Elsaie's little brother, Mothy said indignantly. "You're going nowhere."

Mrs. Leitun shushed the boy and turned to look at her daughter. "You may be old to take care of yourself but answer is no. Elsaie, we have everything we need here. With us. Let's not speak of this anymore please." And with that she went back to her stew as if nothing had happened.

If there was one thing Elsaie didn't like, it was being ignored. Her cutlery fell to the table with a clatter as she spun to face her father, who hadn't said anything at all about the matter. "Pa, listen please. You have to let me go sometime, and it doesn't make any difference when I decide to go and earn my own bread."

"Does that mean I can go out into the world now too?" Mothy piped up. After stern glares from the rest of his family, the boy lowered his eyes, muttering about the unfairness of it all.

"Let me go. Please. We have EJs, I can come visit you wherever you are, just tell me where. Pa left to see the world when he was my age! Mam ... come on," Elsaie pleaded, brown eyes wide. "Even if you tell me I can't, I'll just go anyway. It won't make any difference."

Mr. Leitun looked thoughtful, his brow furrowed and his mustache twitching. Mrs. Leitun on the other hand looked on helplessly, at a loss of words. Young Mothy Leitun had his head resting on one hand while the other played with his food.

And then Mr. Leitun took a deep breath and lay down his verdict. "Ok girl. I won't deny that you are old enough, and that you will go off whether I like it or not. Knowing you, that's exactly what you'll do," he smiled knowingly. " So, I just want to say - even if your mother disagrees, that you can go. Every child has to go and make his or her own living sooner or later."

Elsaie jumped off her seat and wrapped her arms around her father's neck, a wide smile on her face. "Thanks Pa." Then she skipped over to her mother and hugged her as well and waited to hear what she might say. Mrs. Leitun raised her hands and stroked her daughter's chestnut brown hair slowly, as if scared of her letting go too soon. "Just ... take care of yourself. You'll always be my little girl."

There was moisture brimming in Elsaie's eyes. Horrified, she blinked repeatedly, not wanting to cry now. Not here, not now. "You'll always be my Mam," she whispered, planting a silent kiss on her mother's cheek.

That night the Leituns had one last song by the fire before Elsaie would go. Even Mothy sang with a lot more gusto that usual. She left the next morning with music in her ears and a song on her lips, not knowing what the future had for her.
