This is the world of Earth, though it has changed so much, it can barely be called the same name....

No one knows what the date or the year is - time is lost into an oblivion of numbers, and now it is based on other incidents, rather than being independent. In other words, time is no longer in year/month/day of the month. It is measured in '# years since such-and-such', and '# hours before the middle of the night'.

The world has moved forward through millions of years, and so has it's inhabitants. The world went through a great peak of technology, where everything and anything was possible through metal and material. But then humankind realised something remarkable. Technology was flawed. Machines broke down.

Years beforehand, cars had already been banned because of growing obesity and the danger they posed. It seemed now that the rest of technology would follow suit, and steadily the Future became replaced by the Medieval. Some places this change was occurring faster than other places, and now in this time, we have the strange combination of the Medieval and the Future.

In this world, you're as likely to carry a sword as a gun.

One thing that is one of the most resilient pieces of technology is the EJ: A small, metal device attached to the side of almost everyones head, the EJ has many uses. Appearing like a hands-free kit, it's main function is communication. Although it works on brain-waves, it does not have the ability to communicate telepathically. Instead, you can use it to contact whoever you want, an image of the receiving end appearing in your minds eyes.
As well as communication, the EJ is also an organiser for you're memory. Any memories or images can be converted to a visual holographic image for anyone around to see, or to be sent to another EJ. in this way, it is useful as a map, though because it is only linked to your own brain-waves, it can only generate a map from things you have seen.
The EJ used for many other things, including handling money, Diaries, news (if bought from a news journalist) and is like a computer.

During this time, a great war had been raging for many years, separating the world into different small areas. The weak were killed off, and only the strong existed to pass on their genes to the next generation. Survival of the Fittest. It was through this that many mutations began to form - magic. Every land had gained different powers depending on what was best for them to cope in their world: The Magi, a race reliant on intelligence, learnt spells; The Elementals living in the mountains had to learn to use the elements (mostly fire) to their favour. All of the separate races gained different powers, except the Warriors. They were the only ones who traveled the world in times of fear, and the large mixture of genes left them with no powers at all.

Not all of the races were made from such natural means. Technology and Magic, sometimes combined though mostly not, created new races everyday. Dragon, Griffins, Mermaids and things of Mythology were becoming all too real. Others decided to try and make 'the perfect human', in the image of a human but secretly one of the Made rather than the Born.

Now, as the war has been unofficially stopped for hundreds of years, people brave the outside world once more, meeting with new races they never even knew existed, as strange new wonders reveal themselves.

But that's not all: As the time passed, the balance of good and evil began to sway, and now the two have reached an equilibrium of power and people, while three other stances emerge; 'Greater Good', 'Greater Evil' and the very uncommon 'Neutral'. No stance will class themselves as the same as any other: The most linked pairs being 'Greater Good' + 'Evil' with 'Greater Evil' + 'Good', and none of them would ever admit to being the same as another.

This is the setting. Now for the story....
